Medicine bottles - salutary

As our movements have become restricted and our lives have become so still, during COVID many Australians have upped their alcohol consumption, just to take the edge off, we tell our anxious selves.

Created for a project with Manly Art Gallery, this work juxtaposes the medicine bottles from the early days at Quarantine Station with the bottles of wine consumed throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

‘Rather than memento mori, I’m calling paintings in this series /memento biberi’, says Julie. ‘There’s an ambivalence in these still lives. We might love a quarantini at the end of the day, but we know that the drink and the disease can both cast long shadows.’
