Equanimity Tree - Strong
I've been painting my Equanimity trees for more than 15 years now. They are my symbol of serenity and I get the urge to paint them when I'm feeling a bit off balance. Creating this work is a medatitive experience - after a few hours of this repetitive delicate mark making, I feel deeply rested and very calm. And then all is well and in harmony again.
Strong was painted in April 2025 in my studio in Blackheath. I used a rusty old cake tin base that I'd found across the road after the 2019 bush fires. I painted the tree with white japanese ink and then coated the tin with beeswax which stops the rust from going any rustier and buffs up to a lovely sheen.
I love how you can see the criss crossing scars in the centre of the tin where many cakes have been sliced ready to eat.
