Repairable Landscape REEF Library Of Shapes No 4
To create my large scale multi-layered artworks I have to cut many paper stencils. As I work through the layers of the artwork, building up form and composition, I print out each individual stencil, one at a time, onto a separate piece of fabric or paper. These pieces are printed quickly, without fuss, in an intuitive way. I'm in that tuned-in creatively liminal flow state of uncertainty, where good things happen.
These works - my Libraries of Shapes as I call them, represent a kind of legend, a wayfinding document, full of symbols and shapes that hint at the original work but don't exactly explain it.
When I first started making my Libraries of Shapes, the purpose was merely as a record to keep for myself. However, lately I've come to realise that these adjacent works with their playful, quirky Miró-esque qualities are infact more interesting to me than the main artwork ever is.
So with the Repairable Landscape REEF artwork ( that you can read about in detail on my home page) I decided for the first time to not just do one Library of Shapes, but instead to create an edition of ten and make eight of them available for sale. ( I'll keep one and the remaining one is kept with the main artwork)
The purpose of my Repairable Landscapes is to focus on the destruction of the environment. This message is a hard one to bear but these artworks add a light touch to the heavy subject. I like that juxtaposition. I hope you do too.
